SITUATION

The threat of borreliosis (Lyme disease) is on the rise, fueled by the increasing prevalence of ticks and the earlier arrival of warmer weather each year1. Lyme disease presents a significant health concern as these vectors become more abundant and active. Early symptoms can include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The regions of most intense transmission of B. burgdorferi s. l. are in the northeastern United States and in central Europe, where the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. infection among ticks can be as high as 40–50%.2
